This section of the hiking trail connecting the village of Freixeda do Torrão to the Serra da Marofa, in the municipality of Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo, features a dirt path crisscrossed by the tracks of farm machinery, flanked by rustic fences and supporting infrastructure that demarcate local properties. The landscape is characterized by the rain-fed agriculture of Beira Interior, dominated by Mediterranean flora, consisting of low-growing shrubbery, olive groves, and traditional farmlands. In the background, the village nestles on the plateau that precedes the imposing Marofa mountain range. Historically, these trails facilitated agricultural and pastoral travel in the border region of Riba-Côa; today, they form part of the region’s nature tourism networks. The soil, composed of granite and schist, reflects the harsh edaphoclimatic conditions of this cross-border area, highlighting the centuries-old resilience of agricultural practices and human adaptation to a frontier territory marked by the harsh climate and geology of the Beira region.
