The Ribeira River Beach, located in the Albufeira do Azibo Protected Landscape in Macedo de Cavaleiros, is part of the prestigious Iberian Meseta Transboundary Biosphere Reserve, designated by UNESCO. Created by the dam of the same name—which was built between 1977 and 1982 for agricultural and water supply purposes—the reservoir has established itself as a vital ecosystem for conservation and sustainable tourism. The image illustrates the careful planning of the area: the wooden walkway, visible in the foreground, mitigates erosion and ensures accessibility, justifying the “Accessible Beach” designation and the recurring Blue Flag award. Surrounded by a canopy of cork oaks and holm oaks, the quality of the water supports non-motorized water sports and a unique avian biodiversity. In 2012, the excellence of this Trás-os-Montes gem was recognized as one of the “7 Wonders—Beaches of Portugal” in the river beach category, reaffirming the balance between human intervention and the preservation of the natural heritage of northeastern Trás-os-Montes.
