The Gothic tympanum of the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Estella, Navarre, dating from the first half of the 14th century, features a structure organized into horizontal registers, in keeping with the Gothic iconographic tradition. On the upper level, the Crucifixion stands out, with Christ flanked by the Virgin Mary and Saint John. Below, a dense composition brings together various figures, possibly alluding to episodes from the Passion, including winged figures and symmetrically arranged groups. The lower frieze, of a narrative nature, displays a succession of seated figures, interpreted as the College of the Apostles. Carved in limestone, the ensemble reveals the characteristic carving style of the Navarrese-Aragonese workshops, with drapery featuring angular folds and expressive faces. The hierarchical arrangement of the scenes and the deep relief serve a catechetical purpose, intended to convey essential episodes of the faith to pilgrims passing through Estella on the Way of St. James. The tympanum is read from bottom to top, following the theological progression of the iconographic program, and stands as a remarkable example of medieval monumental sculpture on the Iberian Peninsula.
