Leiria, as seen from the loggia of the Paços Novos of the Castle. In the foreground stands the Cathedral, dedicated to Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, whose construction began in 1550 by order of King João III and at the instigation of the diocese’s first bishop, Friar Brás de Barros. The design by architect Afonso Álvares is a prime example of Portuguese Mannerist architecture, featuring an austere façade that encapsulates the transition from the Renaissance to the Chão style. The surrounding urban fabric highlights the city’s historical stratification, with traditional houses featuring terracotta roofs clustered around the church, extending into the contemporary urban fabric and along the banks of the Lis River. This network of ceramic roofs and organic street patterns defines the historic core, where civic functions and centuries-old commerce coexist, contrasting with the periphery characterized by high-rise buildings and a regular grid, the result of urban expansion in the 19th and 20th centuries.
