The Philippine Bridge of Sertã, commonly known as the Carvalha Bridge, stands as an enduring testament to 17th-century civil architecture in Portugal. Built between 1607 and 1610 under the rule of the Philippine Dynasty, this monumental structure replaced an earlier crossing of likely Roman origin, consolidating the strategic passage over the Ribeira da Sertã. Built of schist masonry reinforced with granite—materials native to the Beira Baixa region—the bridge is characterized by its six round arches of unequal spans, which conform to the morphology of the riverbed. Upstream, the triangular abutments demonstrate a refined hydraulic engineering technique, essential for mitigating the force of the currents and safeguarding the integrity of the piers. Currently reserved for pedestrian use and integrated into the landscape of the Alameda da Carvalha, the structure transcends mere road functionality, establishing itself as the town’s heritage landmark and a defining symbol of the historical engineering of the Pinhal Interior region, while preserving its aesthetic richness and structural precision.
