On the Santa Isabel do Monte Mill Trail, in Terras de Bouro, the path winds through a hillside forest where ivy and moss attest to the constant humidity. This route follows the waterways that once powered water mills—the cornerstones of the Minho region’s subsistence economy until the mid-20th century. The hydraulic system, consisting of weirs and irrigation channels, directed the flow to the water tank, generating the pressure needed to drive the horizontal waterwheel. This, in turn, turned the granite millstones used to grind corn and rye. Part of the Peneda-Gerês National Park, the trail preserves the memory of community-based practices in water management and land use planning. Today, this vernacular heritage transcends its original productive function, playing a central role in environmental education and nature-based tourism, while safeguarding the cultural identity and biodiversity of a landscape shaped by the centuries-old interaction between humans and the mountains.
