Marão: Onde a Eletricidade Desafia a Montanha
The Serra do Marão, an imposing mountain range separating the Douro Litoral and Trás-os-Montes regions in the districts of Porto and Vila Real, poses an engineering challenge for the National Electric Grid. The rugged topography, marked by rocky cliffs and deep valleys, requires exceptional technical solutions for the routing of very-high-voltage transmission lines. The metal lattice towers, painted in white and orange to comply with aviation signaling standards, support conductors and ground wires designed for colossal spans, withstanding extreme wind and ice loads—phenomena that are common at these altitudes. The marker spheres, visible on the cables, ensure the safety of air navigation in the face of the persistent fog that plagues the mountain range. The installation of these structures in hostile terrain requires foundations anchored directly into the quartzite bedrock, the clearing of right-of-way corridors, and the creation of strict maintenance access routes, balancing this vital infrastructure with erosion control and the management of native vegetation to preserve the integrity of this mountainous ecosystem.
