A erosão fluvial e a glaciação moldaram a geologia regional, esculpindo vertentes íngremes e gargantas profundas.

The Ruta del Cares Gorge, in the Picos de Europa National Park in Spain, stretches for about twelve kilometers, connecting Caín, in León, to Poncebos, in Asturias. This trail, built in the early 20th century to serve a hydroelectric supply canal, is today one of the most iconic hiking trails on the Iberian Peninsula. The trail winds along the slope carved out by the Cares River, passing through karst formations that rise to over two thousand meters in elevation. River erosion and glaciation have shaped the region’s geology, carving out steep slopes and deep gorges. The National Park, established in 1918 as Spain’s first protected area, is home to a mountainous ecosystem rich in biodiversity, where the Cantabrian brown bear and the golden eagle coexist. The region also preserves ancestral traditions, such as the sheepfolds and the production of the famous Cabrales cheese, highlighting a deep symbiosis between the cultural heritage and the environmental grandeur of this territory of rugged terrain and austere beauty.
