The Monument to the Discoveries in Belém, Lisbon, features this sculptural detail by Leopoldo de Almeida, unveiled in 1960 to mark the 500th anniversary of the death of Prince Henry the Navigator. Carved from Lioz limestone, the figure of the prince holds a caravel—a symbol of 15th-century maritime expansion—as he gazes out over the Tagus River. The iconography, including the iconic wide-brimmed hat, derives from the Panels of São Vicente, although its identification is debated today. Below stands Prince Fernando, the “Holy Prince,” Prince Henry’s brother, who died in captivity in Fez in 1443, following the disaster at Tangier in 1437. The monument, designed by architect Cottinelli Telmo, is structured as a procession of prominent figures from the fields of navigation, cartography, and missionary work. This work commemorates Prince Henry’s role as the driving force behind the overseas enterprise, preserving the historical richness of a period that redefined the boundaries of the known world, in a solemn style characteristic of the official aesthetics of the Estado Novo.
