On the former bed of the Turia River—now the Turia Gardens—stands a contemporary sculpture of Neptune, the Roman god of water and the seas, recognizable by his trident. The god’s presence takes on special significance here: for centuries, the Turia shaped Valencia’s relationship with water, providing irrigation for the Valencian vegetable gardens but also causing floods with serious consequences. The great flood of October 1957 led to the river’s diversion to the south of the city; the former riverbed dried up and was gradually transformed, beginning in the 1980s, into an urban park. Stretching about nine kilometers, the Turia Gardens run through Valencia from west to east and include, among other structures, numerous bridges that bear witness to the city’s successive transformations. The figure of Neptune thus evokes the site’s riverine history and the transformation of a former hydraulic infrastructure into a public space, where classical mythology engages with the contemporary urban landscape.
