In Largo do Trovador, in the historic district of Guimarães, one can see a group of residential buildings aligned along a sloping street, characteristic of the urban fabric that took shape between the Middle Ages and the 19th and 20th centuries. The facades combine a granite masonry structure—predominant in the Minho region due to local availability and durability—with plaster cladding and, in some cases, industrial tiles, applied both as protection against moisture and as an aesthetic element. The windows with painted frames and the wrought-iron balconies attest to successive adaptations to comfort and urban prestige, while preserving the vertical alignment of the openings. The gabled roofs, with ceramic tiles and overhanging eaves, effectively withstand the Northwest’s rainfall patterns. The preservation of these building facades is part of the policy to safeguard the historic center, designated by UNESCO, reconciling rigorous restoration with the demands of contemporary uses, thereby keeping alive the architectural identity of the city’s birthplace.
