Entre o Gótico e a Modernidade: O Coração da Catedral de Madrid
O interior da Catedral de Santa María la Real de la Almudena, em Madrid, revela a singularidade de um templo cuja construção se prolongou por mais de um século. Iniciada em 1883 sob projecto do marquês de Cubas, em estilo neogótico, a obra foi interrompida pela Guerra Civil Espanhola e retomada em 1944, com uma reformulação assinada por Fernando Chueca Goitia e Carlos Sidro, que adaptaram a fachada exterior ao neoclássico do vizinho Palácio Real. A nave central, aqui visível, conserva o traçado neogótico original, com abóbadas de cruzaria ogival sustentadas por pilares fasciculados de pedra clara. Destaca-se o teto policromado, pintado com motivos geométricos contemporâneos por Kiko Argüello, fundador do Caminho Neocatecumenal, que também executou os murais da abside com cenas da vida de Cristo e da Virgem. Os vitrais modernos filtram a luz sobre o pavimento xadrez em mármore. Consagrada pelo papa João Paulo II, em 1993, é a única catedral espanhola sagrada por um pontífice.
The interior of the Cathedral of Santa María la Real de la Almudena in Madrid reveals the uniqueness of a church whose construction spanned more than a century. Begun in 1883 based on a design by the Marquis of Cubas in the Neo-Gothic style, construction was interrupted by the Spanish Civil War and resumed in 1944, with a redesign by Fernando Chueca Goitia and Carlos Sidro, who adapted the exterior façade to the Neoclassical style of the neighboring Royal Palace. The central nave, visible here, retains its original Neo-Gothic layout, with ogival ribbed vaults supported by fasciculated pillars of light-colored stone. Of particular note is the polychrome ceiling, painted with contemporary geometric motifs by Kiko Argüello, founder of the Neocatechumenal Way, who also created the murals in the apse depicting scenes from the life of Christ and the Virgin Mary. The modern stained-glass windows filter light onto the checkered marble floor. Consecrated by Pope John Paul II in 1993, it is the only Spanish cathedral consecrated by a pope.
