Positano, a town on the Amalfi Coast facing the Tyrrhenian Sea. The town layout unfolds in an amphitheater-like formation on steep slopes, with buildings stacked one atop another and terraces supported by retaining walls—structures essential for creating livable platforms and stabilizing the slopes. Along the waterfront, small boats and the pedestrian promenade are visible, set within an economy that is now predominantly tourist-based. Human settlement in the area dates back to before the Middle Ages: beneath the church of Santa Maria Assunta lies a Roman villa, now housed in the Museo Archeologico Romano di Positano. In medieval times, Positano was part of the political and commercial sphere of the Duchy of Amalfi, a maritime power of particular significance between the 10th and 11th centuries. The built landscape, defined by painted facades, narrow stairways, and successive terraces, reflects an adaptation to limited access, steep slopes, and the geological instability characteristic of the coast. Since 1997, Positano has been part of the “Amalfi Coast” cultural property, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
