Na praia de Espinho, no litoral norte de Portugal, um trator agrícola de cor vermelha prepara-se para participar numa das mais antigas tradições piscatórias da região: a arte xávega. Esta técnica, com origens que remontam a vários séculos, consiste no lançamento de uma rede de cerco a partir de uma embarcação que parte diretamente do areal, sendo posteriormente recolhida à praia com o auxílio de forças mecânicas, hoje asseguradas por maquinaria agrícola. Até meados do século XX, o esforço de arrastar as redes e os barcos era feito por juntas de bois ou pela força humana comunitária, tendo os tratores passado a substituir gradualmente esse trabalho a partir da década de 1960. O veículo aqui retratado apresenta-se acoplado a um reboque de plataforma baixa, sobre o qual se acumulam cabos verdes que servirão para puxar a rede. Ao fundo, o mar agitado antecipa a jornada dos pescadores, enquanto dois homens preparam o equipamento, evidenciando a persistência de um saber-fazer artesanal perante a modernização técnica.

On Espinho Beach, on Portugal’s northern coast, a red farm tractor is getting ready to take part in one of the region’s oldest fishing traditions: xávega fishing. This technique, whose origins date back several centuries, involves casting a purse seine from a boat that sets out directly from the beach, which is then hauled back to shore with the aid of mechanical power—now provided by farm machinery. Until the mid-20th century, the effort to haul the nets and boats was carried out by teams of oxen or by the collective human strength of the community; tractors gradually began to replace this labor starting in the 1960s. The vehicle depicted here is coupled to a low-bed trailer, on which green ropes are piled up—these will be used to pull the net. In the background, the choppy sea foreshadows the fishermen’s journey, while two men prepare the equipment, highlighting the persistence of traditional craftsmanship in the face of technical modernization.
