As ruínas do Castelo de Miranda do Douro, conjunto de matriz gótica cuja construção se iniciou no reinado de D. Dinis, provavelmente em 1294, integram o sistema defensivo da fronteira luso-castelhana. A imagem mostra uma das antigas portas principais da cidade, aberta no recinto amuralhado e flanqueada por torres quadrangulares. Concebida inicialmente em arco redondo, a passagem foi estreitada na segunda metade do século XVI, mediante o fecho parcial do vão, numa lógica de reforço defensivo perante a evolução das técnicas de cerco. Subsistem aduelas pétreas do arco, estabilizadas por uma intervenção contemporânea mediante suportes de aço Corten, destinados a conter as cargas e a prevenir o colapso dos elementos remanescentes. A pátina oxidada do metal assegura a legibilidade da intervenção, distinguindo materialmente a consolidação moderna da fábrica histórica. O conjunto conserva ainda a memória arqueológica da tomada de Miranda pelas tropas espanholas, em 1762, no contexto da Guerra dos Sete Anos.

The ruins of Miranda do Douro Castle, a Gothic complex whose construction began during the reign of King Dinis, likely in 1294, form part of the defensive system along the Portuguese-Castilian border. The image shows one of the city’s former main gates, set within the walled enclosure and flanked by square towers. Originally designed as a round arch, the passage was narrowed in the second half of the 16th century by partially closing off the opening, as a defensive measure in response to evolving siege techniques. Stone arch segments remain, stabilized by a contemporary intervention using Corten steel supports designed to bear the loads and prevent the collapse of the remaining elements. The metal’s rusted patina ensures the intervention is clearly visible, physically distinguishing the modern consolidation from the historic masonry. The complex also preserves the archaeological memory of the capture of Miranda by Spanish troops in 1762, during the Seven Years’ War.
