Calle San Felices, a narrow street in the historic center of Viana, in the Autonomous Community of Navarre, where the medieval urban fabric remains clearly visible thanks to its pedestrian-friendly scale and the continuity of the building facades. In the background stands the Portal de San Felices, a monumental gateway integrated into the system of city walls that enclosed the city and controlled access, traffic, and defense. Linked to the founding of Viana in 1219, when King Sancho VII of Navarre, known as “the Strong,” ordered the construction of the fortified enclosure, this gate marks the transition between the walled interior and the surrounding areas, serving as both an urban landmark and a topographical reference point. The stone masonry construction reveals traditional stone-setting techniques, while the flanking residential buildings—with metal balconies, weathered plaster, and continuous alignment—evidence layers of residential adaptation over time. The central view of the street draws the eye toward the arch, emphasizing the gateway’s function as a passageway, a visual frame, and an element organizing the public space.
