O Santo Sepulcro de Estella: Oito Séculos a Acolher Peregrinos
Na entrada de Estella-Lizarra (Navarra), no traçado do Caminho Francês de Santiago, os peregrinos passam junto à Igreja do Santo Sepulcro, um marco urbano associado ao desenvolvimento da vila medieval como etapa de acolhimento e assistência ao viajante. O edifício conserva elementos românicos, visíveis na volumetria e na cabeceira, mas integra sucessivas campanhas construtivas que se prolongaram do século XII ao XVI, refletindo a transição para o gótico. A fachada principal, datada do século XIV, destaca-se pelo programa escultórico do portal, de execução cuidada, com figuras e motivos que funcionavam como catequese visual e como afirmação de estatuto para a comunidade. Classificada como Bem de Interesse Cultural, a igreja integra o conjunto do Caminho de Santiago inscrito como Património Mundial, reforçando a importância histórica desta rota de peregrinação europeia.
At the entrance to Estella-Lizarra (Navarre), along the French Way of St. James, pilgrims pass by the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, an urban landmark associated with the development of the medieval town as a stopover offering hospitality and assistance to travelers. The building retains Romanesque elements, visible in its massing and apse, but incorporates successive phases of construction spanning the 12th to the 16th centuries, reflecting the transition to the Gothic style. The main façade, dating from the 14th century, stands out for the carefully executed sculptural program of its portal, featuring figures and motifs that served as visual catechesis and as an affirmation of the community’s status. Classified as a Site of Cultural Interest, the church is part of the Way of St. James, which is inscribed as a World Heritage Site, reinforcing the historical importance of this European pilgrimage route.
