Um Portal Entre Muralhas: Leituras do Arco de Santa Clara
O Arco do Dr. Santa Clara, em Elvas, é uma construção oitocentista de arquitetura romântica, concebida como elemento cenográfico integrado na malha urbana intramuros. Assenta sobre uma antiga porta da primeira cerca islâmica, tradicionalmente associada à designada Porta de Tempre, ligada ao lendário combate entre cavaleiros da Ordem do Templo e forças muçulmanas, quando se teria aberto um vão na muralha para permitir o acesso à urbe. A estrutura apresenta planta em L, formada por dois cubelos quadrangulares articulados por um troço de muralha, criando um arco elevado que funciona simultaneamente como passagem e como miradouro urbano. O passadiço superior, com colunas e vãos ritmados, sobrepõe uma leitura cenográfica à função defensiva original, refletindo o gosto oitocentista pela evocação histórica. O arco enquadra o Largo do Dr. Santa Clara, frente ao pelourinho e à igreja das Domínicas, no coração do centro histórico de Elvas. Este conjunto integra a “Cidade‑Quartel Fronteiriça de Elvas e as suas Fortificações”, classificada como Património Mundial pela UNESCO desde 2012.
The Dr. Santa Clara Arch in Elvas is a 19th-century structure in the Romantic style, designed as a scenic feature integrated into the urban fabric within the city walls. It stands on an ancient gate from the first Islamic wall, traditionally associated with the so-called Porta de Tempre, linked to the legendary battle between knights of the Order of the Temple and Muslim forces, when an opening was reportedly made in the wall to allow access to the city. The structure has an L-shaped plan, consisting of two quadrangular cuboids connected by a section of wall, creating a high arch that functions simultaneously as a passageway and an urban viewpoint. The upper walkway, with its columns and rhythmic openings, superimposes a scenic interpretation on the original defensive function, reflecting the 19th-century taste for historical evocation. The arch frames Largo do Dr. Santa Clara, facing the pillory and the Church of the Dominicans, in the heart of Elvas’ historic center. This complex is part of the “Border Town of Elvas and its Fortifications,” designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2012.
