Detalhe da Fonte dos Cavalos (Fonte dos Cabalos), situada na Praça de Platerías, no núcleo histórico de Santiago de Compostela, junto à fachada sul da catedral. Executada em granito, a fonte combina função hidráulica e representação simbólica: as bicas saem de cabeças de cavalos esculpidas, motivo que lhe dá o nome e remete para a tradição de fontes públicas como pontos de abastecimento e de encontro. Sobre o fuste ergue‑se a figura de Santiago Apóstolo, associada ao Caminho de Santiago; o resplendor em forma de estrela reforça a ligação à etimologia popular de “Compostela” (campus stellae) e ao imaginário do peregrino. Ao fundo reconhece‑se a Casa do Cabido, fachada barroca construída em 1758, no século XVIII, para regularizar e “cenografar” a praça, historicamente ligada às oficinas de ourivesaria que justificam o topónimo “Platerías”. O conjunto integra‑se no traçado monumental da cidade velha de Santiago de Compostela, classificada como Património Mundial desde 1985.

Crafted from granite, the fountain combines a practical water supply function with symbolic representation: the spouts emerge from sculpted horse heads, a motif that gives it its name and evokes the tradition of public fountains as places for water collection and gathering. Above the shaft stands the figure of St. James the Apostle, associated with the Camino de Santiago; the star-shaped halo reinforces the connection to the popular etymology of “Compostela” (campus stellae) and the pilgrim’s imagination. In the background stands the Casa do Cabido, a Baroque façade built in 1758, during the 18th century, to regularize and “stage” the square, historically linked to the goldsmith workshops that give rise to the place name “Platerías.” The complex is part of the monumental layout of the old city of Santiago de Compostela, designated a World Heritage Site since 1985.
