Miranda do Douro Castle, perched on a cliff overlooking the Douro River in the district of Bragança, preserves traces of human settlement dating back to the Bronze Age. Its medieval layout stems from the renovations undertaken by King Dinis in the late 13th century, which were fundamental to the consolidation of the border with the Kingdom of León. Inside the fortification, the parade ground is bounded by imposing masonry walls—now partially in ruins—featuring an arched gate and a sturdy buttress. The cistern’s opening, a vital element for the water supply during prolonged sieges, remains protected by an iron grate. The structure suffered irreversible damage in May 1762, during the Seven Years’ War, when an accidental explosion in the powder magazine destroyed the keep and claimed the lives of approximately four hundred people. Designated a Property of Public Interest since 1955, this stronghold bears witness to the rich history and strategic importance of the Trás-os-Montes region.
