At dawn, the Camino de Malladichas in Pedralba de la Pradería, Zamora, reveals the austere landscape of the Sanabria region and the slopes of the Sierra de la Culebra. This mosaic of low-growing shrubs and quartzite outcrops provides an ideal habitat for large populations of deer, attracting the iconic Iberian wolf. Between mid-September and early October, the area is filled with the bellowing of the red deer (Cervus elaphus), a phenomenon in which the males emit deep bellowing calls to assert their dominance. The activity reaches its peak at dawn, requiring observers to maintain strict silence and use long-range binoculars to safeguard the animals’ well-being. Despite the severe wildfires that ravaged the region in the summer of 2022, consuming vast areas of pine forest, the Sierra de la Culebra remains a crucial stronghold of biodiversity on the Iberian Peninsula, maintaining an ecological density that continues to attract the interest of scientific research and specialized nature tourism.
