This detail from the upper gallery of the Apostles forms part of the Gothic façade of the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Estella-Lizarra, Navarre. Built primarily in the 14th century, this structure is a prime example of Navarrese Gothic sculpture, strategically located along the Way of St. James. The gallery displays figures of the apostles beneath trefoil-shaped pointed arches, separated by columns with carved capitals. The sculptures, depicted in a frontal pose, bear iconographic attributes that allow for their individual identification. The limestone work reveals the technical virtuosity of medieval stonemasons, evident in the depth of the drapery and the expressiveness of the facial features. Serving as a transition between the portal and the roof, the gallery is protected by a wooden eave that has mitigated erosion of the stone surface. This arrangement constituted a “visual catechesis,” in which the apostles—pillars of the Church—served as guardians and sources of doctrinal authority for pilgrims. Its location in Estella accounts for the monumental scale of this exterior narrative, designed to make a powerful public and devotional impact.
