The Library of the National Palace of Mafra, housed in the former Casa da Livraria, is one of the most remarkable 18th-century bibliographic collections in Europe. Part of the monumental complex commissioned by King João V, it occupies a single room measuring approximately 1,000 m², whose spatial layout and Rococo-style wooden bookshelves stand as a major testament to royal and monastic book culture. The collection comprises approximately 36,000 volumes, covering theology, medicine, pharmacy, history, geography, literature, philosophy, law, architecture, the arts, and music. Among the items of particular significance are incunabula, the Nuremberg Chronicle (1493), Bibles, illuminated books of hours, and the Encyclopédie edited by Denis Diderot and Jean le Rond d’Alembert. It also houses a musical collection associated with the liturgical activities of the Royal Basilica and its six historic organs. The preservation of the collection is further aided by the nocturnal presence of insectivorous bats, which reduce populations of insects that could potentially damage paper, inks, and adhesives.
