The marshland and the old salt flats adjacent to Rosário River Beach, in the Union of Parishes of Gaio-Rosário and Sarilhos Pequenos, in the municipality of Moita. This is a transitional area between land and water, deeply influenced by the tidal regime of the Tagus Estuary. In the foreground, one can observe halophytic and marsh vegetation, including reeds and rushes, typical of brackish habitats that serve as nurseries for fish and invertebrates, as well as a refuge for shorebirds. The salt flats, now mostly decommissioned, bear witness to the historical activity on the south bank, which relied on tanks and sluice gates that regulated evaporation for salt production. On the right bank, the stone pine forest frames the picnic park and recreation area, harmonizing public enjoyment with a sensitive ecosystem that requires careful management. This natural and cultural heritage remains a fundamental defining feature of Moita’s riverside landscape.
