Old tanning vats located in Largo da Cidade, in the heart of Guimarães’ Leather District, one of the most significant industrial hubs in the city’s history. These granite vats, arranged in rows and dug into the ground, were essential to the leather tanning process, which involved immersing hides in solutions of oak bark and vegetable tannins—essential for transforming raw hides into durable leather. In the background stands an old wooden drum, a rotating mechanism used in the washing, fleshing, or dyeing stages, now preserved as a technical testament to the activity. The adjacent stone building, with its sturdy design, is typical of the factory structures associated with the tanning industry, which flourished in Guimarães between the 18th and 20th centuries. The complex, now an open-air museum, is part of a heritage trail that highlights the economic and social importance of this artisanal activity to the historical identity of the Minho region.
