In this narrow alleyway in Linhares da Beira, in the municipality of Celorico da Beira, one can observe an urban layout of medieval origin, consisting of winding streets that follow the slope of the hillside and connect to the fortified center. Perched on a rocky hilltop, Linhares Castle—which existed during the reign of King Sancho I and was renovated by King Dinis in 1291—serves as the focal point of the settlement. The dwellings feature granite masonry walls, laid in an irregular pattern with pronounced joints—a physical expression of the local availability of stone and the adaptation of construction to the terrain. The cobblestone pavement organizes pedestrian traffic and, historically, animal traffic; the central gutter ensures the drainage of rainwater, limiting surface erosion. As part of the network of Historic Villages of Portugal, Linhares preserves an urban fabric with a generally triangular layout, structured by squares, religious buildings, and civic facilities, within which medieval, Manueline, modern, and contemporary architectural layers coexist.
