The Cathedral of Santa María la Real de la Almudena stands in the center of Madrid, next to the Royal Palace, with which it shares the Plaza de la Armería. Construction began in 1879, at the initiative of the Marquis of Cubas, who initially envisioned a large Neo-Gothic cathedral. Construction spanned more than a century, with interruptions caused by the Spanish Civil War and financial difficulties. Later, the project was redesigned by Fernando Chueca Goitia and Carlos Sidro, who adapted the façade to the neoclassical style of the neighboring palace while preserving the Neo-Gothic interior. The cathedral was consecrated by John Paul II in 1993, making it the only Spanish cathedral consecrated by a pope. It is dedicated to Our Lady of Almudena, the patron saint of Madrid, whose image, according to tradition, was hidden within the Muslim walls and recovered after the Christian reconquest of the city in 1085. The twin towers, the central dome, and the arcades highlight this unique stylistic synthesis.
