The cobblestone street of the Historic Village of Castelo Mendo, in the municipality of Almeida, showcases the compact layout characteristic of medieval frontier settlements. Perched on a hill overlooking the Côa River, the settlement was organized into two walled enclosures, the Citadel and the Burgh, occupying a vital strategic position for monitoring the border territory facing Castile. The granite masonry facades, with narrow openings and mortar joints, reflect vernacular solutions adapted to the harsh climate: walls with high thermal inertia and roofs covered with ceramic straw-shaped tiles. In the image, the typical exterior balcony with a staircase leading to the living quarters stands out—a distinctive feature of Beira architecture. The steep slope of the cobblestone street, in addition to facilitating stormwater drainage, historically served defensive purposes by hindering the advance of invaders in narrow spaces. Currently, restoration projects carried out by the Aldeias Históricas de Portugal network aim to preserve this classified heritage, reconciling residential use with the demands of contemporary cultural tourism.
