View of the Ksar of Aït-Ben-Haddou, a fortified complex of earthen architecture located in the Ounila Valley, in the southern foothills of the High Atlas, in the province of Ouarzazate. The structures that have been preserved today do not appear to date from before the 17th century, although the techniques and layout of this type of settlement are much older. The ksar was part of the trade route connecting ancient Sudan to Marrakesh via the Draa Valley and the Tizi-n’Telouet Pass, serving as one of its trading posts. The dwellings, some of which take the form of small kasbahs, are concentrated within defensive walls reinforced by corner towers and are interconnected with communal spaces, including a mosque, a square, a granary, and threshing areas. The construction combines rammed earth (pisé) and adobe, made of raw earth and plant materials, coated with earthen mortar; its vulnerability to erosion requires periodic maintenance. In the foreground, irrigated farm plots can be seen along the Ounila River. Inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1987, the ksar features restored sections and has a long history with cinema, having served as a setting for productions such as *Lawrence of Arabia* and *Gladiator*. More recently, Aït-Benhaddou was chosen by Christopher Nolan to represent Troy in *The Odyssey* (2026).
