The Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía, designed by Valencian architect Santiago Calatrava, is the opera house and performing arts center of the City of Arts and Sciences in Valencia. Opened in 2005, it is part of the complex built on the former bed of the Turia River and stands out for the monumental scale of its sculptural composition in white concrete, punctuated by curvilinear volumes clad in ceramic trencadís. The large metal roof, suspended above the body of the building and extending in a winged profile, intensifies the architecture’s biomorphic expression, evoking a feather or an organic-looking structure. With more than 40,000 m² and a height of 75 meters, the Palau houses four performance spaces—the Main Hall, the Auditori, the Martín i Soler Theater, and the Aula Magistral—intended, respectively, for opera, symphonic music, dance, theater, recitals, and smaller-scale events. Its location is part of the urban redevelopment of the Turia River, whose former course—diverted after the 1957 flood—has been transformed into an extensive green and cultural corridor.
