The Almedina Tower and Arch constitute the main medieval gateway to the walled city of Coimbra, forming part of the ancient defensive system that enclosed the city along approximately two kilometers of wall. The place name Almedina, of Arabic origin, means “the city” and refers to the period when this walled sector established itself as the central urban core. The gate, defended by a square tower, underwent extensive reconstruction in the 11th century, following the definitive Christian reconquest of Coimbra, and was further improved in later periods. Throughout the 16th century, the tower was adapted to house the City Council and the Court of Appeal, a circumstance that earned it the name Tower of the Court of Appeal or City Council Tower. Today, the space houses the Walled City Center of the Coimbra Municipal Museum, an interpretive center dedicated to the history of the city wall and the role of this structure in medieval urban development. Coimbra’s city wall, including this gate, has been classified as a National Monument since 1910.
