The Almond Blossom Route, in the municipality of Vila Nova de Foz Côa, is one of the most popular itineraries in the Upper Douro between late February and mid-March, a period when almond trees (Prunus dulcis) cover the hillsides with white and pink blossoms. Castelo Melhor, an ancient medieval village perched on a spur overlooking the Côa River, is part of this agricultural landscape shaped by centuries of terraced farming, shared with olive trees, vineyards, and holm oaks. The introduction of the almond tree to the region is often attributed to the Arab presence on the Iberian Peninsula, and the crop has thrived thanks to the Mediterranean climate, characterized by cold winters and dry summers. In the background of the image, on the hilltop, stone remains can be seen that evoke the ancient human occupation of this territory, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to the Paleolithic rock engravings of the Côa Valley. In the foreground, the tilled land and rudimentary fencing bear witness to the continuity of small-scale family farming characteristic of the interior regions of Trás-os-Montes and the Douro.
