In early March, the hillsides around Vila Nova de Foz Côa, in northeastern Trás-os-Montes, display the early blooming of the almond tree (Prunus dulcis), whose flowers typically appear before the leaves, signaling the transition from winter to spring. Rain-fed agriculture is well-suited to the poor, stony soils common in schist and granite regions, as well as to the Mediterranean-influenced climate, with dry summers and cold winters; late frosts can, however, affect fruit set. The agricultural landscape features a mosaic of olive groves, scrubland, and small plots, bounded by dry-stone walls that support slopes and help prevent erosion. The rural path in the foreground evokes the traditional access routes to the farms and the tourist trails featuring almond trees in bloom, promoted by the municipality. A few kilometers away, the Côa Valley preserves important sites of Paleolithic rock art in the open air, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1998.
