This stained-glass window is part of the Church of Saint-Germain-l’Auxerrois in Paris; it was created around 1840 by master glassmaker and archaeologist Étienne Thévenot (1797–1862) as part of the 19th-century restoration efforts of the church. The work is part of the French Neo-Gothic movement, which sought to revive the medieval aesthetic of the great cathedrals. The central panel features Saint Germanus of Auxerre (c. 378–448), the church’s patron saint, depicted in traditional episcopal vestments: a miter, liturgical robes, and a pastoral staff held in his left hand, a symbol of his authority as a bishop. Surrounding the figure, geometric borders and floral medallions unfold in a rigorous chromatic interplay dominated by deep blues, yellows, and reds—colors characteristic of the nineteenth-century Gothic palette. Beneath the ogival window, two statues of the faithful kneeling in prayer extend the devotional interpretation of the ensemble, linking the earthly dimension of prayer with the celestial realm suggested by the light filtering through the stained glass.
