Porta de Mérida: o limiar pétreo da Cáceres monumental
Área da antiga Porta de Mérida, na entrada sul da cidade monumental de Cáceres, ponto onde se situava uma das portas romanas da muralha, demolida em 1751. Através do arco viário abre‑se a perspetiva para a torre da Casa de los Sánchez Paredes, solar nobre erguido no século XV e posteriormente reformado no século XVI, que marcava a transição entre o exterior da cerca e o recinto intramuros. Localizada na atual Calle Puerta de Mérida, esta casa senhorial constituía um elemento de prestígio na entrada do conjunto histórico, junto a uma via que prolongava um dos eixos viários principais de origem romana. A torre, acrescentada em época posterior, destaca‑se no perfil urbano como símbolo do estatuto da família, associada a um escudo heráldico com inscrição latina alusiva à busca da cidade futura e da felicidade eterna. O enquadramento da torre desde o local da desaparecida porta ilustra a continuidade de uso e de poder sobre um dos acessos estratégicos à Cáceres histórica.
The area of the former Puerta de Mérida, at the southern entrance to the historic city of Cáceres, where one of the Roman gates in the city wall once stood before being demolished in 1751. Through the archway, the view opens up to the tower of the Casa de los Sánchez Paredes, a noble manor house built in the 15th century and later renovated in the 16th century, which marked the transition between the area outside the walls and the intramural enclosure. Located on what is now Calle Puerta de Mérida, this stately home was a prestigious landmark at the entrance to the historic quarter, next to a road that extended one of the main thoroughfares of Roman origin. The tower, added at a later date, stands out in the urban skyline as a symbol of the family’s status, featuring a coat of arms with a Latin inscription alluding to the quest for the future city and eternal happiness. The view of the tower from the site of the vanished gate illustrates the continuity of use and power over one of the strategic access points to historic Cáceres.
