Caminhos do Alvão: A Ligação sobre as Águas do Olo
Esta ponte sobre o rio Olo, no Parque Natural do Alvão, integra a pequena rede viária rural que liga lugares dispersos e soutos, servindo o acesso a Varzigueto e a zonas de cultivo e pastoreio. A estrutura, de tabuleiro em betão armado apoiado em pilares, com guardas metálicas simples, corresponde a tipologias frequentes na segunda metade do século XX, concebidas para vencer vãos curtos com baixo custo e manutenção reduzida. O Olo, afluente do Tâmega, apresenta caudal muito variável: no inverno e após chuvas intensas pode inundar as margens e aumentar o risco de erosão junto aos apoios, exigindo inspeções periódicas a fissuras e a fenómenos de escavação (“scour”). A galeria ripícola, com amieiros e salgueiros, contribui para estabilizar as margens e filtrar sedimentos, integrando a paisagem de montanha marcada por granitos, urzes e lameiros tradicionais.
This bridge over the Olo River, in the Alvão Natural Park, is part of the small rural road network that connects scattered settlements and chestnut groves, providing access to Varzigueto and to farming and grazing areas. The structure, featuring a reinforced concrete deck supported by piers with simple metal guardrails, is typical of designs common in the second half of the 20th century, conceived to span short distances at low cost and with minimal maintenance. The Olo, a tributary of the Tâmega, has a highly variable flow: in winter and after heavy rains, it can flood the banks and increase the risk of erosion near the supports, requiring periodic inspections for cracks and scour. The riparian gallery, with alders and willows, helps stabilize the banks and filter sediments, blending into the mountain landscape marked by granite, heather, and traditional marshes.
